My Top 10 Tips for Healing Insomnia

I’m sharing these thoughts from a blogging friends whose blog I enjoy so much. I know many of you suffer insomnia as I myself do at times. These ideas may be helpful.

IMG_1004Does fibromyalgia cause insomnia or does insomnia cause fibromyalgia?  I do not have a definitive answer.

I do knowthat insomnia took hold of my life forseven years, letting go of its grip in small bursts, but now limiting itself (thankfully) to occasional very short bouts.

My Top 10 Tips for Healing Insomnia are:

  • Limit caffeine, sugar and alcohol in your diet,
  • Avoid exercising in the evening,
  • Avoid watching television right before bedtime, especially the news!
  • Keep to a regular bedtime,
  • Epsom salt baths are magnesium rich and aid restful sleep.  Magnesium supplements also help,
  • Keep you bedroom free of clutter, including books, excess furniture, clothes lying on the floor…
  • Keep electronic equipment out of the bedroom  – no televisions, computers, mobile phones…
  • Decorate your bedroom in restful colours – if in doubt use pastels,
  • Invest in a good quality bed, use hypoallergenic bedding, washed in environmentally friendly products,
  • Keep a journal by…

  1. I am a terrible sleeper, always have been – even as a teenager I’d still be up early! I go against these tips a bit though and leave the TV on, but at such a low volume you can’t actually make out what is being said, it is just a background murmur. For me, it works better than total silence (or snoring!)

    1. You do what works for you. I am lucky enough to have a guest bedroom and when the snoring gets too bad I take my pillow and leave (think child with teddy). Sadly I never experience real quiet as I suffer badly with tinnitus, so I have my own built in background noise. I’m glad you have some solutions though because sleep is so important to our wellbeing.

      1. Oh I know that is horrid – a work colleague suffered from the same thing. Knowing I had terrible sleep problems she recommended a ‘background noise’ machine (waves, rain, birdsong etc) designed for tinnitus sufferers. It worked really well for me (until it broke!). For anyone reading the comments (I know people do, and I definitely do!) I would suggest it is worth trying.

  2. Thank you for this. I do have some tapes (yes really old fashioned technology) and a little player that are designed to help with the tinnitus, they apparently retrain the hearing, but they should be listened to for many hours each day and it isn’t always practical to do so. I don’t think my better half would appreciate background noise, but we do have a clean air unit that we put on and that helps.
